Some of these studies began with adults and compared their AAI scores with their Strange Situation scores obtained as infants (Hesse, 2008). Other studies have followed individuals prospectively from infancy into adulthood (see Grossmann, Grossmann, & Waters, 2005, for an overview of the major longitudinal studies on attachment). The Minnesota Study of Risk and Adaptation from Birth to Adulthood was the first prospective longitudinal study of attachment, beginning in 1975 and currently in its 33rd year (Institute of Child Development, 2009).
