In addition, it is customary to determine total sulfur, ash-fusion temperature, and heating value. Studies have shown that proximate analyses can be used to estimate certain physical, chemical, and thermal properties of coal. Humphreys and Lawrence developed a series of correlations relating volatile matter, Hardgrove grindability index, heating value, percent carbon, and percent hydrogen. The ultimate analysis from a dried sample is defined as the determination of carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen, and ash and the estimation of oxygen by difference.

First, special techniques were devised for etching the coal sample and after that the oil immersion technique was developed. Marie C. Stopes5is credited for developing a system of classification utilizing the reflected-light technique. Stopes recognized four coal constituents (lithotypes) that could be seen with the unaided eye (macroscopic) in banded bituminous coals. To these lithotypes, she gave the names vitrain, clarain, durain, and fusain. Bright coal was distinguished as vitrain and clarain, dull coal as durain, and fossil charcoal as fusain.

Inerts, Volume Percent Fig. 1-5. Strength factor for various reactive maceral types. Petrographic composition has been significant for the character of cokes produced under standard coal preparation and blending procedures throughout the United States and has produced a basis for predicting the coke stability factor. Variations from these standard conditions result in stability factors that will vary from those obtained under standard conditions.
